Acrylic vs PETG: Which Plastic Is Better for Displays and Guards?

Walk into any modern store, office or restaurant and you will find clear plastic everywhere, framing products, protecting counters and guarding machinery. Much of it looks identical at a glance, yet the material behind it can behave very differently. Two of the most common choices are acrylic and PETG, and the question of acrylic vs PETG comes up constantly when clients plan a new display or a protective guard. Each has real strengths, and the right choice depends on what the piece needs to do, where it will live and how it will be made.

At Acrylics By Design in Brampton, we draw on more than 39 years of plastics industry experience to help clients across the GTA match material to purpose. Understanding the differences between these two plastics is the first step toward a piece that looks right and lasts.

Acrylic vs PETG: Understanding the Two Materials

Acrylic, also known as PMMA and often sold under names like Plexiglas, is a rigid, glass like thermoplastic prized for its exceptional clarity. It transmits more light than ordinary glass, and it resists yellowing well over time. Its surface is harder than many plastics, it can be polished to a brilliant edge, and it cuts and machines beautifully. You can learn more about its properties on our page about clear acrylic or Plexiglass.

PETG is a modified version of PET, the same family of plastic used in drink bottles, with glycol added to improve its toughness and workability. It is notably more impact resistant than acrylic and far less likely to crack or chip. It can be bent cold in some thicknesses and thermoforms easily at relatively low temperatures, which makes it popular for formed packaging, point of purchase pieces and machine guards. Its clarity is good, though generally a step below premium acrylic.

Clarity, Finish and Appearance for Displays

When appearance is the priority, acrylic usually leads. Its optical clarity, gloss and ability to take a flame polished or diamond polished edge give displays a crisp, premium look. Retail fixtures, museum cases, collectible displays and signage faces all benefit from that jewel like finish. Acrylic also accepts laser cutting exceptionally well, producing smooth, glossy edges straight from the machine.

PETG does not polish to the same brilliance, and its edges do not respond to laser cutting in the same way, which is why it is typically routed or sheared. Its surface is also softer and more prone to scratching. For high end displays that customers will see up close, acrylic is generally the better choice, and it is the backbone of the acrylic displays we fabricate for retailers and collectors.

Strength, Impact and Guards

When a piece needs to take abuse, the balance shifts. PETG's toughness makes it well suited to applications where impact is likely, such as machine guards, equipment covers and high traffic protective barriers. It is less likely to crack if struck, and it can flex rather than fracture. Acrylic is far stronger than glass and resists breakage much better, but under sharp impact it can crack where PETG would dent or bend.

For the most demanding guarding applications, polycarbonate often outperforms both. It offers extraordinary impact resistance and is the material of choice for safety glazing and heavy duty guards. Our guide to selecting plastic materials explains how acrylic, polycarbonate and other plastics compare when strength is the deciding factor.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Project

The simplest way to decide is to list your priorities. If clarity, polish, UV stability and a refined finish matter most, acrylic is usually the answer. If the piece must be thermoformed, bent cold or survive frequent impact, PETG or polycarbonate may be wiser. Budget, thickness, quantity and fabrication method all play a role as well, and sometimes a project combines materials, with an acrylic display face mounted on a tougher structure.

Our team works through these decisions every day from our 7,000 square foot facility, with precision laser cutting, dual head CNC routing and a retail showroom under one roof. Our approach to plastic fabrication starts with understanding the job, and we are always happy to talk through acrylic vs PETG for your specific application before a single sheet is cut.
